Accident – Death – Obituary News : Niagara Falls, N.Y. (AP) – A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday at the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls, resulting in the death of a husband and wife. The victims were identified as Kurt P. Villani and Monica Villani, both 53 years old and residents of Grand Island, a picturesque Buffalo suburb near the falls. The couple belonged to a prominent family that owns Gui’s Lumber and operates seven Ace Hardware stores in western New York.

The shocking crash took place when their car collided with a border checkpoint, causing a fiery explosion. The Niagara Falls Police Department has not yet released specific details regarding the cause of the accident. The incident sparked widespread concern on both sides of the border, with online videos and images circulating, seemingly depicting the aftermath of an explosion. As a precautionary measure, authorities closed the Rainbow Bridge and three other crossings in the area. However, after hours of investigation, the FBI’s Buffalo office stated that there were no indications of a terror attack. Consequently, the case was handed over to local police to be treated as a traffic investigation.

The Niagara Falls Police Department has emphasized that due to the complexity of the crash, the investigation will require ample time to complete. In an official statement, the department extended its condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her astonishment at the incident, describing it as “surreal.” She remarked that the vehicle involved in the crash was completely incinerated, leaving behind only the engine and charred debris. Hochul, a Democrat, even questioned whether the scene was generated by artificial intelligence due to its extraordinary nature.

The safety measures implemented after the accident caused significant traffic congestion at a nearby airport in Buffalo and other areas, coinciding with one of the busiest travel days of the year leading up to the American Thanksgiving holiday. However, the bridges were eventually reopened, providing relief to travelers.
