NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) — The small community of Niagara Falls is mourning the loss of Kurt P. Villani and Monica Villani, a beloved husband and wife who tragically lost their lives in a fiery car crash at a border checkpoint. The couple, both 53, were prominent figures in the Buffalo area, known for their ownership of Gui’s Lumber and multiple Ace Hardware stores.

Kurt and Monica Villani were residents of Grand Island, a picturesque suburb of Buffalo, located in close proximity to Niagara Falls. They were well-respected members of the community, and their sudden demise has left family, friends, and business associates in shock and grief.

Gui’s Lumber, a family business that has been operating since the mid-1980s, has been a staple in the western New York region. With seven Ace Hardware locations under their ownership, the Villani family has played a significant role in serving the community’s construction and hardware needs.

The exact circumstances leading to the fatal crash at the Rainbow Bridge are yet to be disclosed by authorities. Witnesses reported that the couple’s vehicle sped through an intersection, collided with a low median, and was propelled into the air, crashing into a row of security booths before erupting into flames.

The shocking incident prompted concerns on both sides of the border, as images and videos of the aftermath circulated online. As a precautionary measure, officials temporarily closed the Rainbow Bridge along with three other crossings in the vicinity. The FBI’s Buffalo office swiftly investigated the matter, ruling out any indication of a terrorist attack and handing over the case to local law enforcement for further inquiry as a traffic-related incident.

The Niagara Falls Police Department, grappling with the complexity of the crash, has cautioned that the investigation will require time to conclude. In a statement released on Friday, the department officially identified Kurt and Monica Villani as the victims but refrained from providing further details.

Expressing condolences to the grieving families, the City of Niagara Falls extended their sympathies. New York Governor Kathy Hochul, while addressing the incident, described it as “surreal” and emphasized the devastating extent of the damage caused by the explosion. She remarked that the vehicle was “basically incinerated,” with only the engine and charred debris remaining.

The consequences of the crash extended beyond the immediate site, causing traffic disruptions at a nearby Buffalo airport and other locations on one of the busiest travel days in the United States, just ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. However, the closed bridges were eventually reopened, alleviating the inconvenience faced by travelers.

The Rainbow Bridge, which offers breathtaking views of the majestic falls, witnesses approximately 6,000 vehicles crossing it daily, according to the U.S. Federal Highway Administration’s National Bridge Inventory.
