The aftermath of an explosion at the Rainbow Bridge, which connects the United States and Canada, has caused widespread concern on both sides of the border. Video and images circulating online showed the devastating aftermath of the incident, leading officials to close the bridge and three other crossings in the area. Authorities conducted an extensive investigation, lasting several hours, before the FBI’s Buffalo office confirmed that there were no signs of a terror attack. The case has now been handed over to local police as a traffic investigation.

The Niagara Falls Police Department, responsible for the ongoing investigation, has stated that the process will take time to complete due to the complexity of the crash. On Friday, the agency released a statement naming the victims but refrained from providing any further details. In response, the City of Niagara Falls expressed their condolences to the families affected by this tragic incident.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul described the crash as “surreal” and highlighted the extent of the damage caused. Hochul, a Democrat, revealed that the vehicle involved in the explosion was essentially incinerated, with only the engine and a scattering of charred debris remaining. The governor even questioned whether artificial intelligence (AI) had played a role in the incident due to its extraordinary nature. She expressed her astonishment at the vehicle’s trajectory, the subsequent crash, and the resulting explosion and fire.

The safety measures implemented after the incident caused significant traffic congestion, affecting nearby airports in Buffalo and other areas on one of the busiest travel days in the United States, just before the American Thanksgiving holiday. However, the bridges were eventually reopened, alleviating some of the disruption caused.

The Rainbow Bridge, a short steel bridge offering scenic views of the falls, sees approximately 6,000 vehicles crossing it each day, according to the U.S. Federal Highway Administration’s National Bridge Inventory.
