Second Victim in Hopkinton Fire, Judith and Seldon MacNeill, Honored at Massachusetts Firefighter of the Year Awards

Accident – Death – Obituary News : HOPKINTON — Gary Daugherty, who served as the deputy fire chief at the time of the incident, along with five other firefighters from Hopkinton and one from Ashland, were recently recognized for their heroic efforts in battling a two-alarm fire that broke out on Hayward Street early on Easter morning. The firefighters were honored during the 34th Annual Massachusetts Firefighter of the Year Awards, held at Mechanics Hall in Worcester. Interim Fire Chief Daugherty, along with Hopkinton fire Lt. John Sheridan and firefighters Jim Gosselin, Maxwell Hoadley, Douglas R. Lewis III, and Jarrod Taranto, as well as Ashland fire Lt. Tony Duca, were presented with the prestigious Governor’s Citation for Meritorious Conduct.

The ceremony, led by Gov. Maura Healey and State Fire Marshal Marshal Davine, saw a total of 130 firefighters from 22 different departments across the state being recognized for their exceptional service. The event paid tribute to these brave individuals who risked their lives to protect others.

The fire incident occurred in the early hours of April 9, with multiple 911 calls reporting a structure fire and possible explosion at 69 Hayward St. The Hopkinton Fire Department received the distress calls at 1:12 a.m. Upon arrival, Ladder 1 and Engine 2 discovered flames engulfing a 1.5-story home, with live power lines posing an additional hazard in the front yard. An eyewitness informed the firefighters that there were still two individuals trapped inside the burning building.

Without hesitation, the firefighters swiftly deployed a hose line through the side yard and began dousing the flames. Lt. Sheridan, realizing the severity of the situation, immediately called for a second alarm. Shortly thereafter, Interim Fire Chief Daugherty arrived at the scene and joined forces with Sheridan to forcefully enter the premises and conduct an aggressive search of the home. Their courageous efforts paid off as they discovered a resident lying on the floor near a bathroom. With great care and determination, they carried the individual to safety, where awaiting EMS crews provided further medical assistance.

Undeterred by the intense heat and thick smoke, Daugherty and Sheridan re-entered the house to search for a second victim. With the assistance of Lt. Duca from Ashland Fire Department, they found the individual in a rear bedroom, overcome by smoke inhalation. Together, they rescued the resident and brought them to safety. Tragically, both residents, identified as Judith and Seldon MacNeill, succumbed to their injuries. A dog also perished in the fire. However, the firefighters’ swift response and coordinated teamwork provided a glimmer of hope for the victims, showcasing their unwavering dedication to preserving life and property.

Interim Fire Chief Daugherty expressed his gratitude towards the mutual aid departments and the training received, stating, “Only through our training, teamwork, and support from our mutual aid departments were we able to make this happen.” He also extended his appreciation to the paramedics who provided critical medical care to the victims.

It is worth noting that the tragic incident could have been prevented if there had been functioning smoke alarms in the home. Firefighters emphasized the importance of having these life-saving devices installed in every residence.

Speaking about the significance of the Firefighter of the Year Awards, Gov. Maura Healey remarked, “Each year, the Firefighter of the Year Awards recognize acts of bravery, heroism, and service that are truly remarkable — even by the remarkable standards set by Massachusetts firefighters. From structure fires to rushing waters, this year’s recipients defied grave danger to protect lives and preserve property. It’s an honor to celebrate them as individuals and teams. They represent the very finest in a tradition of helping others in times of danger and crisis.”
