Accident – Death – Obituary News : Massive Mob Storms Government Hospital in Imphal After Arrival of Fleeing Myanmar National

Imphal, Manipur – In a disturbing incident that unfolded on Thursday, a violent mob forcefully entered the premises of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) after learning that a Myanmar citizen, who had escaped the ongoing conflict in his country, was receiving treatment there. The unruly crowd, fueled by rumors that the individual was a “Kuki militant,” was eventually dispersed by the police, who resorted to teargas.

The chaos erupted when news spread like wildfire that the Myanmar national, identified as Khoantum and hailing from Thanan in Myanmar’s Sagaing region, had been admitted to JNIMS. Allegations regarding the man’s involvement in militant activities further intensified the tensions on the scene.

Regrettably, Khoantum succumbed to the bullet injuries he had sustained during the unrest in Myanmar and tragically passed away at the hospital on Thursday afternoon. Despite numerous attempts to contact JNIMS medical superintendent Dr. Lokeshwar Singh for comment, no response has been received thus far.

According to a reliable security source, Khoantum, a civilian seeking refuge, crossed the porous international border into Manipur after sustaining injuries in Myanmar. Desperate for medical assistance, he arrived at an Assam Rifles post in Kamjong district around 2 am. The authorities at the post provided him with initial medical aid before handing him over to the Manipur Police at approximately 3:55 am on Thursday. Subsequently, Khoantum was transported to Imphal for further treatment.

The ongoing conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities in Manipur has created a sharp divide, with each community dominating specific regions. As a consequence, individuals from the Meitei community are unable to venture into areas controlled by the Kuki-Zomis, and vice versa. The prevailing sentiment among the Meitei community, who constitute the majority in Imphal where JNIMS is situated, is that unregulated illegal immigration from Myanmar, particularly of the Chin people who share the same ethnicity as the Kuki-Zomis, is the primary cause of instability in the state.

Meanwhile, Myanmar has been engulfed in a wave of escalating violence since October 27, marked by coordinated attacks against the military junta in various parts of the country. The intensity of the conflict has even spilled over into regions bordering India, resulting in over 5,000 individuals seeking refuge in Mizoram.

The incident at JNIMS serves as a grim reminder of the deep-rooted tensions and anxieties prevailing in the region. Authorities are urged to take immediate steps to address the concerns of both communities and promote peace and harmony in Manipur..
