Accident – Death – Obituary News : LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A man identified as Michael Earl has been sentenced to a minimum of 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to stabbing two individuals at University Medical Center (UMC) in Las Vegas last year. The Clark County District judge handed down a sentence of 20 years to life for the first-degree murder charge, and an additional consecutive term of one to 10 years for the attempted murder with a deadly weapon charge.

According to court records, Earl reached a plea deal with prosecutors on October 3, 2022, by pleading guilty but mentally ill.

The incident took place on June 23, 2022, within the psychiatric ward at UMC. Authorities reported that Earl left his hospital room and entered another room, stabbing a man identified as 29-year-old Porfirio Rea, for reasons that remain unknown. Tragically, Rea succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

Following the first attack, Earl then proceeded into the hallway and targeted another patient. However, correctional officers were able to apprehend him in his room before he could cause further harm.

Law enforcement officials have emphasized that this was an isolated incident that occurred within a secure area of the hospital. Retired LVMPD detective Phil DiPalma, in a previous interview with Channel 13, explained that in a secure facility like UMC, thorough searches are typically conducted to ensure that psychiatric patients do not have access to any objects that could potentially harm others.

The sentencing of Michael Earl serves as a reminder of the tragic events that unfolded at UMC and the devastating impact it had on the victims and their families. By imposing a significant prison term, the court has sought to hold Earl accountable for his actions and ensure that he is removed from society for an extended period.
