Armed Home Invasion on Sawyer Street

On Wednesday at approximately 8:30 p.m., the South Portland police responded to an armed home invasion at 114 Sawyer Street. According to the authorities, shots were fired during the incident. Fortunately, there were no significant injuries reported at the scene. However, the two suspects managed to escape and are currently still at large.

While the police have assured the public that there is no immediate threat to their safety, some residents in the area remain shaken by the incident. Steve Sunenblick, a long-time South Portland resident, expressed his surprise, stating, “We’ve lived here for almost 50 years, and we have never heard of any incident that even comes close to something like that.” Another resident, Beth Sunenblick, expressed her alarm, particularly regarding the armed factor involved in the home invasion.

Gunfire Incident on Commercial Street

While the South Portland police were still attending to the home invasion scene on Sawyer Street, detectives observed a vehicle crossing the Casco Bay Bridge. This vehicle was fleeing from a separate incident involving gunfire. The incident, which occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Thursday, took place near 262 Commercial Street in Portland.

The suspect involved in the Commercial Street incident quickly left the scene and drove over the bridge into South Portland. Eventually, the suspect turned onto Morse Street, a dead-end road. As the police pursued, the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, trespassing through the yards of nearby houses and even breaking through a wooden fence.

The presence of armed police officers sweeping the neighborhood on Morse Street was a jarring sight for Tyler (last name withheld), a witness to the incident. He described the adrenaline rush of seeing armed officers in his usually peaceful neighborhood, stating, “Especially at 12:30 a.m., when you see people with guns, it’s definitely a sight that you don’t normally see here.”

Arrest and Charges

Fortunately, the South Portland police were successful in apprehending the suspect involved in the incident on Commercial Street. The suspect has been identified as 30-year-old Mohamud Abdullahi from Buxton. Abdullahi now faces charges of reckless conduct for the alleged shots fired on Commercial Street.

In addition, Abdullahi is also being charged with refusing to submit to arrest and assault. The assault charge stems from an incident where Abdullahi reportedly spat in the face of a police officer.

Appeal for Public Assistance

The South Portland police are still actively searching for the suspects involved in the armed home invasion on Sawyer Street. They urge residents in the vicinity to review any security or doorbell camera footage they may have and to report anything suspicious to the authorities.

These incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
