NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) — A devastating car crash at a border checkpoint in Niagara Falls has claimed the lives of a well-known husband and wife from western New York. The victims have been identified as Kurt P. Villani and Monica Villani, both 53, who resided in the picturesque suburb of Grand Island, New York, located in close proximity to the iconic falls.

Kurt and Monica Villani were highly respected members of their community and hailed from a prominent family that owned Gui’s Lumber and operated seven Ace Hardware locations across western New York. The Villani family has been successfully running their business since the mid-1980s, becoming a familiar name in the local construction and home improvement industry.

In light of this tragic incident, the families of Kurt and Monica Villani, together with Gui’s Lumber, expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the outpouring of prayers, condolences, and well wishes. The Erie County Sheriff’s Office released a joint statement on behalf of the bereaved families on Friday, requesting privacy as they begin the difficult process of healing.

Authorities are yet to disclose the exact circumstances that led to the fatal crash at the Rainbow Bridge. Eyewitnesses reported that the couple’s car raced through an intersection, struck a low median, and was catapulted through the air before colliding with a row of security booths, causing a fiery explosion. The shocking incident sparked widespread concern on both sides of the border as videos and images of the aftermath circulated online. Consequently, officials swiftly closed the bridge and three other nearby crossings. The FBI’s Buffalo office conducted a thorough investigation and determined that the incident was not a terror attack, subsequently handing over the case to local police as a traffic investigation.

The Niagara Falls Police Department, responsible for the ongoing investigation, emphasized that the complexity of the crash necessitates a comprehensive examination, which will inevitably take time to complete. Governor Kathy Hochul of New York described the crash as “surreal” and commented on the extent of the destruction, revealing that the vehicle had been almost entirely incinerated, leaving only the engine and scattered charred debris behind. Speaking at a press conference, Governor Hochul, a Democrat, marveled at the surreal nature of the incident and raised the question of whether artificial intelligence could have been involved, considering the vehicle’s trajectory and the subsequent crash, explosion, and fire.

The safety measures implemented in response to the accident caused significant traffic congestion, affecting nearby airports in Buffalo and disrupting travel plans on one of the busiest days of the year, just ahead of the American Thanksgiving holiday. However, the bridges were later reopened to facilitate the movement of vehicles.

The Rainbow Bridge, a short yet remarkable steel structure, offers breathtaking views of the world-famous Niagara Falls and serves as a crucial transportation route, accommodating approximately 6,000 vehicles daily, according to the U.S. Federal Highway Administration’s National Bridge Inventory.
