An Indian man, identified as K Ganesh Patra, has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife, K Basanti Patra, and their two-year-old daughter, Debasmita, by releasing a poisonous cobra into their room. The incident took place in the village of Adheigaon in Odisha’s Ganjam district.

According to reports, Ganesh had been having a marital dispute with his wife. They got married in 2020, and tension had been building between them. On October 6, Ganesh allegedly purchased a cobra from a snake charmer, claiming that he intended to use it for religious purposes.

Tragically, that night, Ganesh released the snake from a plastic jar into the room where his wife and daughter were sleeping. The next morning, both Basanti and Debasmita were found dead with snake bites, while Ganesh claimed to have slept in another room.

Upon discovering the bodies, Ganesh informed his neighbors that a snake had entered the house and bitten his wife and child. The villagers quickly killed the snake and rushed Basanti and Debasmita to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Ganesh lodged a complaint with the police, and a case of unnatural death was registered. However, suspicions about the circumstances of the incident began to arise, and the police started questioning snake charmers in the area.

Ganesh’s father-in-law, suspecting foul play, accused him of murder. After a month-long investigation, Ganesh was arrested by the Ganjam Superintendent of Police, Jagmohan Meena. During the interrogation, Ganesh initially denied the allegations but eventually confessed to his crimes.

Superintendent Meena explained, “The accused was arrested a month after the incident as there was some delay in gathering evidence against him. Meanwhile, we also received the post-mortem report, which clearly indicated that the death of the mother-daughter duo occurred during late October 6 night. This raised suspicion about how the reptile could have remained in the same room until morning, several hours after biting the victims. During interrogation, he initially denied the allegation and later claimed that the snake might have entered the room on its own but eventually confessed to committing the crime.”

The tragic incident has shocked the community, and neighbors and relatives are struggling to come to terms with the loss. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing marital disputes through peaceful means and seeking professional help when needed.

The authorities are now focused on ensuring that justice is served, and Ganesh will face the full extent of the law for his alleged heinous act..
