“I like showing my support for the store. It’s not the store’s fault what happened,” said Tim Hunley of Dayton, who expressed no concerns about being at the Beavercreek Walmart on Friday. His sentiments were echoed by many others, including Ann Bryant of Dayton, who emphasized that Walmart should not be blamed for the unfortunate event.

Law enforcement officers were present outside the store, ensuring the safety of shoppers, as it reopened at 6 a.m. on Friday. The visible presence of two sheriff’s deputies and three police cruisers aimed to provide reassurance and maintain a sense of security.

The shooting, which occurred at 8:35 p.m. on Monday, involved a 20-year-old Dayton resident named Benjamin Charles Jones. According to the police, Jones entered the Walmart and began shooting, resulting in the injury of four individuals who were subsequently transported to nearby hospitals. Investigations have revealed that the attack may have been motivated by racially motivated violent extremist ideology, based on evidence collected, including journal writings from the attacker.

The victims of the incident included a white female, two Black females, and a white male, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the attack. The local community expressed solidarity with the victims and their families, acknowledging the tragic circumstances.

While shoppers focused on supporting the Beavercreek Walmart, others ventured out early on Friday morning to various stores in the Dayton region, seeking holiday deals. Centerville’s Cabela’s, known for its hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation merchandise, saw over 100 eager shoppers lined up before its 5 a.m. opening. The first 250 shoppers were rewarded with mystery gift cards valid for use throughout December, attracting a significant crowd.

David Beeler and Davis Bowser of Centerville, who typically do not participate in Black Friday shopping, were motivated to visit Cabela’s after seeing it on TikTok. For Dottie Burks of Moraine, Black Friday shopping has become a cherished tradition, with her family meticulously planning their shopping destinations each year.
