61-year-old man arrested for posing as Delhi Police officer and extorting money

Delhi: In a shocking incident, a 61-year-old man was apprehended on Friday for impersonating a Delhi Police officer and deceiving individuals by extorting money from them under the pretense of providing assistance in criminal cases related to their names. The suspect, identified as Lakshmi Narayan Sharma, works as a caterer by profession.
The Complaint
The matter came to light when Suraj Singh lodged a complaint at Sagarpur police station against Lakshmi. Singh alleged that the accused, who introduced himself as RK Sharma, claimed to hold the position of additional station house officer at the Sagarpur police station. He further accused Sharma of coercing him into paying Rs 5000 and demanding an additional Rs 1.5 lakh to resolve a criminal case linked to the complainant’s name.
Investigation and Arrest
Upon receiving the complaint, the police initiated a thorough investigation into the matter. Surveillance footage from CCTV cameras was carefully examined, leading to the identification and subsequent arrest of the accused. During the arrest, the authorities recovered a genuine police uniform and a nameplate bearing the name “RK Sharma” from Lakshmi Narayan Sharma.
“When asked to provide valid proof of his identity, the imposter failed to produce any and attempted to flee,” stated a senior police official, as reported by The Times of India.

Accused’s Confession
During interrogation, Sharma admitted to working as a caterer but confessed to engaging in extortion activities for several months as a means to make easy money. As a consequence, a case has been registered against the offender under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including impersonation of a public servant, cheating by impersonation, and cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property. Legal proceedings in connection with the case are currently underway.
