PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A woman has been handed down a severe prison sentence after pleading guilty to driving under the influence and causing a fatal crash that claimed the lives of two state troopers and a pedestrian on an interstate in Philadelphia last year.

On Wednesday, 23-year-old Jayana Webb, a resident of Eagleville, appeared in a Philadelphia courtroom where she pleaded guilty to three counts each of third-degree murder and homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence. The early morning crash occurred in March 2022. As a result, Webb has been sentenced to 27 and a half to 60 years in prison.

District Attorney Larry Krasner has described the sentencing as “a just resolution of one of the most shocking incidents of vehicular violence in recent memory.”

The fatal crash took place on Interstate 95 near south Philadelphia’s sports stadiums. Troopers Martin Mack III and Branden Sisca were attempting to guide a pedestrian, identified as 28-year-old Reyes Rivera Oliveras from Allentown, to safety from the southbound lanes when a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed struck all three individuals. Tragically, the troopers and Oliveras lost their lives at the scene.

According to defense attorney Michael Walker, Webb, who is currently seven months pregnant, will be allowed to remain out of custody until she gives birth in February. She will also be granted some time after that to bond with her child before she reports to prison.

During the court proceedings, Walker stated that his client expressed deep sorrow and offered her apologies to the families of the victims. He said, “She had hoped that at some point in their lives they would be able to forgive her. She will never forgive herself. She suffers greatly because of what she did and recognizes that she is punished and has ruined a large portion of her life.”

Prior court hearings focused on Webb’s blood alcohol content and her activity on social media. It was revealed that she had posted on social media about being stopped for driving at a speed of 110 mph in a 50 mph zone earlier that morning. Authorities explained that the troopers who initially stopped her were redirected to assist Oliveras, who was attempting to cross the highway. As they were trying to remove him from the road, Webb recklessly attempted to pass the parked state police SUV at a high speed, resulting in the tragic collision.

Prosecutors confirmed that Webb’s blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit, and active components of marijuana were also found in her system.

Trooper Mack, 33, had enlisted in November 2014 and had been assigned to the Philadelphia barracks since 2015. Trooper Sisca, 29, had enlisted in February of the previous year and graduated in August. Speaking about the troopers, Colonel Robert Evanchick, the state police commissioner, stated that both officers “had bright careers ahead of them” before “their lives were senselessly cut short.”
