JAMMU/RAJOURI: Two terrorists, including a high-ranking Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander trained in Afghanistan, were neutralized during a fierce gunfight with security forces on Thursday in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, according to officials.

In a significant operation against the terrorists in the Bajimaal area of the Dharmsal belt, four army personnel, including two brave captains, lost their lives, while two others sustained injuries.

Following the operation, firing was temporarily ceased during the night, and the area was strategically cordoned off to prevent the escape of the terrorists. As dawn broke on Thursday, the gun battle resumed, resulting in the elimination of two militants. The operation is now in its final phase, as informed by officials.

Initially, a defence spokesman reported that a Pakistani terrorist had been killed during the exchange of fire. However, subsequent updates revealed that another terrorist, who was yet to be identified, had also been eliminated.

With the aim of ensuring the terrorists’ capture and to contain any potential threat, additional security personnel were deployed overnight, fortifying the densely forested area.

The defence spokesman confirmed that the Pakistani terrorist, identified as Quari, was a hardcore member of Lashkar-e-Taiba and had received training on the Pakistan-Afghanistan front. He held a high rank within the terrorist organization and had been actively operating in the Rajouri-Poonch region for the past year. Quari was believed to be the mastermind behind the Dangri and Kandi attacks, as per police sources. Known for his expertise in improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and sniper skills, he operated from concealed caves.

The White Knight Corps of the Army, in a post on X, revealed that the joint operations in the Gulabgarh forest area of Kalakote, Rajouri, were launched based on specific intelligence received on Sunday.

This successful encounter is a major blow to Lashkar-e-Taiba’s nefarious activities in the region and serves as a testament to the relentless efforts of the security forces in maintaining peace and harmony in Jammu and Kashmir.
