Accident – Death – Obituary News : Suspect Apprehended After High-Speed Chase and Crash in Hillsborough County

TAMPA, Fla. – A suspect, identified as 54-year-old Ross Jones, was arrested in Hillsborough County after leading Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) on a high-speed chase and crashing into a power pole early Thursday morning.

According to FHP, troopers attempted to pull over Jones when they noticed his car without tail lights and failing to maintain lanes on US 98 and Griffin Road in Lakeland. However, the suspect refused to stop and instead accelerated, initiating a pursuit. Jones reportedly ran through at least two red lights before heading towards Hillsborough County on I-4.

During the chase, the suspect reached speeds of up to 123 miles per hour, endangering both himself and other motorists on the road. FHP attempted a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver to immobilize the vehicle, but Jones veered off into a ditch and collided with a power pole, causing it to fall onto a nearby business.

After the crash, Jones abandoned the disabled car and attempted to flee on foot. The pursuing trooper quickly caught up to him and observed the suspect dropping a handgun during the pursuit. In response, the trooper aimed their firearm at Jones, who promptly complied and surrendered, allowing the trooper to handcuff him.

Jones now faces multiple charges, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, aggravated fleeing with damages, and driving with a suspended license. He was subsequently transported to Orient Road Jail in Hillsborough County.

The incident resulted in significant damage to the power pole, estimated to cost approximately $2,000, according to FHP. The local power company, TECO, has been notified of the incident and is taking necessary measures to repair the damages.

This arrest comes as FHP continues to prioritize public safety and crack down on reckless driving behaviors. Motorists are reminded to always obey traffic laws, including maintaining proper vehicle lighting and staying within designated lanes. Failure to do so can not only lead to legal consequences but also pose a serious risk to oneself and others on the road.

As investigations into this incident continue, FHP urges anyone with additional information to come forward and assist in the case. The cooperation of the community is vital in ensuring the swift resolution of such cases and maintaining a safe environment for all residents..
