The victims of the attack, which occurred just days before Thanksgiving, were identified as two Black women, a white woman, and a white man. They were wounded as the shooter, identified as 20-year-old Benjamin Charles Jones from Dayton, entered the store armed with a Hi-Point 45-caliber Carbine long gun. He unleashed a hail of bullets, leaving victims scattered throughout the building, before tragically turning the weapon on himself.

Authorities responded swiftly to the incident, with police arriving at the scene just three minutes after the first distress call came in at 8:36 p.m. Sadly, they discovered Jones dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at 8:42 p.m. Despite efforts to reach out to Jones’ relatives, The Associated Press was unable to establish contact with them.

Further investigations have revealed that Jones purchased the firearm just two days prior to the attack from a store in Dayton. Authorities are now looking into whether he provided false information on his background check form and are delving into his background and online activity for any additional clues.

As of Tuesday, three of the victims were reported to be in stable condition at local hospitals, while one woman remained in critical but stable condition. The identities of the victims have not been released by authorities, who are focusing on supporting them during this difficult time.

This tragic incident comes just a day after another shooting outside a Walmart in Anchorage, Alaska, where a man killed a woman before taking his own life. The police in Anchorage have determined that the incident was domestic violence-related.

The Walmart in Beavercreek, Ohio, has unfortunately been the site of previous incidents. In 2014, a white police officer fatally shot 22-year-old John Crawford III, a Black man, after he picked up an unpackaged pellet rifle from a shelf. The family of the victim reached a $1.7 million settlement with the city of Beavercreek, which also led to changes in police policy.

It is essential to address the rise in racially motivated violence and extremism that continues to plague our society. Acts like this remind us of the importance of fostering a culture of inclusivity, understanding, and respect. As Beavercreek Mayor Bob Stone stated, “In the face of adversity, the strength of our community shines through.”

This tragic incident also brings back memories of the 2019 shooting in El Paso, Texas, where a white gunman targeted Hispanic shoppers, killing 23 people. In response to that incident, Walmart discontinued sales of certain types of ammunition and requested that customers no longer openly carry firearms in their stores. The retail giant now exclusively sells hunting rifles and related ammunition.

As investigations into the Ohio Walmart shooting continue, communities and law enforcement agencies must work together to combat the spread of racist extremism and ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals..
