Accident – Death – Obituary News : Man Faces Charges Following Deadly Crash in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE – A Milwaukee man is facing charges in connection with a fatal crash that occurred on November 18th in the city’s northwest side. Prosecutors argue that the man should not have been driving in the first place, as his license had been revoked.

The accused, 34-year-old Avery Young, is alleged to have been driving with a revoked license at the time of the collision. Tragically, one person lost their life at the hospital after the crash, which took place near Appleton and Capitol at approximately 8:30 a.m. that morning.

According to the criminal complaint, first responders arrived at the scene to find a green Dodge Challenger and a blue Mazda. The Dodge Challenger was unoccupied, while a man was discovered seriously injured in the Mazda. Witnesses at the scene directed an officer to a man sitting on a nearby ledge, who was later identified as Young.

Young informed the officer that he was the driver and sole occupant of the Dodge Challenger. He claimed that the Mazda had run a red light and collided with his vehicle. However, when asked for identification, Young failed to produce a valid driver’s license. It was later determined that his license had been revoked, leading to his arrest after receiving treatment for a leg injury.

Tragically, the 40-year-old driver of the Mazda had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken to the hospital. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy revealed that he died as a result of multiple blunt force injuries.

A witness who was stopped at the red light on Appleton Avenue provided an account to the police. He stated that he observed the Mazda traveling west on Capitol, attempting to beat the red light. The witness then heard the Dodge Challenger’s engine approaching from behind on Appleton at a high rate of speed. The Dodge Challenger overtook the witness’ car and collided with the Mazda.

Surveillance footage captured the moment when the Mazda, heading west on Capitol, ran the red light and crashed into the Dodge Challenger as the light turned green on Appleton Avenue.

Upon conducting a records check, investigators discovered that the Dodge Challenger driven by Young had a “facsimile VIN” on display. However, the actual VIN, found at the city tow lot, revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen from Iowa on April 27th.

During a police interview, Young admitted that he was aware that his license had been revoked. However, he claimed that he had been in court two months prior and was told that he would receive “paperwork,” leading him to believe that he could drive until then.

Court records indicate that Young has a history of convictions related to driving offenses. Since 2017, he has faced eight prior convictions for operating while suspended, operating after revocation, or operating without a license. Additionally, in 2019, he was convicted of three counts of fleeing or eluding the police in separate cases.

Celia Jackson, a member of the Coalition for Safe Driving MKE, stressed that tickets and enforcement alone would not solve Milwaukee’s reckless driving problem. She believes that a comprehensive strategy addressing the underlying behavior is necessary.

At the time of the Appleton and Capitol crash, Young’s license had been revoked since July 10th. He received notification via mail that he would not be eligible for reinstatement until 2028. Furthermore, he had been stopped by law enforcement on three occasions between July 10th and the crash:

– On August 20th, he was cited for operating after revocation. Bodycam footage from that incident showed Young acknowledging that his license had been revoked.
– On August 21st, he received a citation for speeding. The officer who pulled him over explicitly told him that he “shouldn’t be driving.”
– On October 6th, he was stopped for driving an unregistered vehicle. Once again, bodycam footage captured the officer informing Young that his license had been revoked and advising him to find alternative transportation.

Jackson expressed her concern about the prevalence of reckless driving in the city, stating that her heart breaks a little more each day.

This incident serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of responsible and licensed driving. It underscores the need for comprehensive strategies to address reckless driving behavior in order to ensure the safety of all road users..
