According to an arrest report, witnesses who were present at the scene informed the police that they heard approximately five gunshots and saw an African American male holding a firearm. The witnesses described the suspect as being between 30 to 40 years old, sporting dreadlocks, and having distinctive tattoos adorning his face. The alarming nature of the incident was further exacerbated when one witness revealed that their vehicle had been shot while they were seated inside it at the nearby Las Vegas Academy of Arts theatre building. The report stated that the building was occupied by students and faculty at the time, who were also startled by the sound of gunshots.

Approximately 20 minutes after the initial emergency call was made, a plain-clothes detective spotted an individual matching the suspect’s description, later identified as Major Sanford. The detective observed Sanford entering and exiting an apartment, leading to his subsequent arrest. Upon apprehension, Sanford was found to be in possession of a bag containing a firearm and shockingly confessed to the officers, stating, “I killed that alien.”

Further investigation by the police led them inside the apartment where they conducted a welfare check. Tragically, they discovered the lifeless body of a man identified as Shannon Awa, who had been shot in the head. Authorities pronounced him dead at the scene, leaving the community grieving the loss of a fellow resident.

During subsequent interviews with investigators, Sanford divulged that he had been residing in the apartment with his mother and Awa. Sanford claimed that he referred to Awa as an “alien” due to their lack of biological relationship, despite Awa’s desire to be seen as his brother. Sanford alleged that a confrontation between the two ensued because Awa attempted to rob him by taking his marijuana and firearm.
