This initiative aims to provide serious gamers in India with an opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge in online gaming, especially for those who do not have access to professional education in this field.
According to a recent study conducted by HP, nearly half of gamers in India rely on platforms like YouTube and their fellow gamer friends to improve their gaming skills. Surprisingly, 61% of gamers surveyed were not even aware of the existence of gaming courses in the country. This highlights the need for accessible and comprehensive education in the gaming industry.

To address this gap, HP has introduced free online courses through its HP Gaming Garage, which is hosted on the edX platform. These courses cover a wide range of topics including esports management, game design, and game programming. What sets these courses apart is their availability in 12 different languages, including English, Hindi, and Telugu, making them accessible to a diverse audience across the country.
Vickram Bedi, Senior Director (Personal Systems) at HP India, expressed the company’s vision of making gaming mainstream and creating an inclusive gaming ecosystem that caters to everyone’s aspirations to game and grow. Bedi also emphasized HP’s commitment to affordability, stating that their gaming PC range starts at around Rs 50,000 (approximately $675) and they offer PCs through a monthly EMI scheme of just Rs 3,499 (approximately $47).
In addition to the online courses, HP has also established Omen Playground stores across India. These stores provide a space where gamers can experience PC gaming free of cost and engage with gaming communities to socialize with top gamers and further improve their skills.
The HP India Gaming Landscape Study 2023 revealed some interesting findings. It showed that nearly half of serious gamers in India claimed to earn between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 12 lakh per annum, indicating a significant income potential in the gaming industry. Moreover, sponsorships and esports tournaments were identified as significant sources of income for gamers. The study also highlighted a positive shift in the perspective of parents towards gaming, with 42% of respondents approving of gaming as a hobby. However, concerns about the stability of a gaming career and potential social isolation are still prevalent among parents.

The study further emphasized the need for better information and awareness about gaming prospects in India. Currently, 49% of parents rely on friends and family for information about gaming careers, indicating a lack of accurate and comprehensive information. HP’s online courses and initiatives like the Omen Playground stores aim to address these concerns and provide a platform for aspiring gamers to learn and grow in a supportive environment.
The gaming industry is not limited to a specific demographic, as the study revealed that 75% of GenZ and 67% of Millennials in India are serious gamers. Additionally, the survey included 3,000 gamers across 15 Indian cities and found that 58% of women respondents were identified as serious gamers. This highlights the inclusive nature of the gaming industry and the growing interest among a diverse audience.
