In a tragic incident in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, a man identified as Akpan, popularly known as Fregene, was shot and killed by gunmen believed to be cultists. The incident occurred in the Rumukalabo area on Wednesday night, as Akpan was returning home after watching a football match.

According to eyewitnesses, the assailants had been following Akpan and launched their attack when he was vulnerable. They shot him twice in the neck at close range and swiftly fled from the scene, leaving him lying in a pool of his own blood.

The horrifying incident sent shockwaves through the community, which had previously been known for its peace and tranquility. A resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, lamented the lack of means to defend themselves, saying, “Akpan’s body lay on the ground after the cult boys left. We were powerless as we don’t possess firearms like these criminals. Chaos ensued as people scrambled to save themselves.”

The following morning, residents and passers-by gathered near the crime scene to discuss the tragic occurrence. While some expressed concerns about the possibility of mass arrests by the police, others called for a thorough investigation to uncover the identities of the culprits and bring them to justice.
