Man Found Dead in McHenry County Jail Identified as Sean Grendel

A 51-year-old man, identified as Sean Grendel of McHenry, was found dead in his cell at the McHenry County jail on Tuesday, according to the county coroner’s office. Grendel was discovered unresponsive by a correction officer and was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office released a statement confirming the incident and stated that an autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. The coroner, Michael Rein, emphasized that all preliminary findings and toxicology reports would be considered pending and under investigation following the autopsy.

Court documents reveal that Grendel had recently been charged with driving while his license was suspended or revoked due to a previous offense of driving under the influence of alcohol. In addition to this alleged felony, Grendel faced various traffic offenses, including operating an uninsured vehicle, disobeying a stop sign, speeding, failing to yield to an emergency vehicle, and driving with expired license plates.

Grendel had two other active cases in McHenry County, as indicated by court records. He was charged with failing to provide accurate information as required by the Illinois Violent Offender Against Youth Registration Act on August 30th. Additionally, he faced charges of driving while his license was revoked and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer on August 24th.

Court documents also revealed that Grendel had two children who did not live with him.

The investigation into Grendel’s death will be conducted by the coroner’s office in collaboration with the Major Investigation Assistance Team and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
