A tragic incident unfolded in Ottawa’s Centrepointe neighbourhood in the early hours of Thursday morning, resulting in the death of a 28-year-old man and leaving another man fighting for his life in hospital. The shooting, believed to be a targeted attack, occurred on Draffin Court, just off Hemmingwood Way, at approximately 6:10 a.m.

Upon receiving reports of shots fired, emergency crews swiftly responded to the scene. Tragically, one man, identified as VanDame Munga, was pronounced dead at the location. Another 28-year-old man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was immediately rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. As of Thursday afternoon, his condition remained critical.

The Ottawa Police Homicide Unit has taken charge of the investigation into this shocking incident. No arrests have been made so far in connection with the shooting, and the police are urging any witnesses to come forward and provide any information that might assist in solving the case.

“The investigation is ongoing, and police are asking for any witnesses to come forward,” stated an Ottawa police spokesperson. “Investigators believe that this incident was targeted.”

Concerns Over Rising Homicide Rate in Ottawa

This latest incident marks Ottawa’s 14th homicide of 2023, significantly contributing to the growing concern over the city’s rising homicide rate. According to Ottawa Police, this is the ninth homicide by firearm reported so far this year.

Looking back at 2022, Ottawa witnessed a total of 15 homicides, with five of those resulting from shootings. The alarming increase in violent crimes has prompted authorities and community leaders to intensify their efforts in tackling the root causes and implementing measures to enhance public safety.
