A tragic road accident in Gouribidanur, Chickballapur district, has claimed the life of a 17-year-old student and left ten others injured. The incident occurred on Thursday morning (November 23) when an autorickshaw carrying the victims collided head-on with a goods vehicle.

The victims, all hailing from Kurugodu village, were on their way to attend college in Gouribidanur when the unfortunate accident took place. The lack of bus services in the area forces students to rely on private vehicles and autorickshaws for transportation, as explained by a police officer familiar with the situation.

Unfortunately, this reliance on private vehicles and autorickshaws often leads to reckless driving, with drivers trying to complete as many trips as possible. The autorickshaw driver involved in the accident, identified as 19-year-old Lokesh, was allegedly driving in a rash and negligent manner while navigating a curve, resulting in the collision with the goods vehicle approaching from the opposite direction near Nagappa block.

The impact of the collision was devastating, causing the autorickshaw to be severely mangled and its passengers thrown in all directions. Fortunately, passers-by rushed to their aid and promptly transported the injured to nearby hospitals. Tragically, one of the victims, identified as Vanaja, could not survive her injuries and succumbed to them. While two other students remain in critical condition, the remaining injured individuals are currently receiving medical treatment at two different hospitals and are said to be out of immediate danger.

In a distressing turn of events, the driver of the goods vehicle fled the scene immediately after the accident, abandoning the vehicle behind. Authorities are now working to locate and apprehend the driver.

In response to this tragic incident, the police have announced their intention to hold meetings with autorickshaw and private vehicle operators in order to raise awareness about the dangers of ferrying excessive passengers.

It is worth noting that the city traffic police have recently launched a campaign targeting autorickshaws and private vehicles that transport school children in excess numbers. As part of this initiative, over 100 vehicles have already been booked, and Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, M.N. Anucheth has confirmed that enforcement efforts will continue to tackle this issue.
