Accident – Death – Obituary News : The tragic death of Denise Morgan, a 39-year-old Irish woman, in an apparent murder-suicide in Queens, New York City, has sparked a warning from her sisters about the importance of paying attention to “red flags” in relationships. The New York Police Department discovered Denise’s body on October 21st, along with the body of her former partner, 33-year-old Joed Taveras. A firearm was recovered near Taveras, and the police have identified him as the suspect in the murder.

Lisa Morgan, one of Denise’s sisters, spoke to RTÉ Prime Time and emphasized the need to raise awareness about domestic violence. “We are speaking as Denise’s voice, just to try and raise awareness about domestic violence,” she said. Lisa urged others to make a plan and find a way to leave abusive relationships. “You have to make a plan to not let them know you’re going… you have to get out,” she added.

Denise Morgan moved to New York seven years ago with her ex-husband and their daughter. After their marriage ended amicably, she became involved with Joed Taveras. According to Denise’s sisters, she endured years of coercive abuse from Taveras, which Lisa witnessed during a visit to New York two years ago. They also stated that the abuse had escalated to physical violence in recent months.

The family has shared text messages from Denise in the weeks leading up to her death, in which she described instances of Taveras strangling her and holding a knife to her throat. Shannon Morgan, another sister of Denise, explained that the abuse became more severe after Denise discovered Taveras was cheating on her. “She found out that he was cheating on her, that’s when it started getting physical… he knew that she was leaving him, he just couldn’t handle that,” Shannon said.

The sisters expressed their feelings of helplessness when speaking to Denise about her situation. “We knew she was in a bad situation… that’s the guilt that’s going to live with us forever, knowing what could have been,” Shannon added. Denise had plans to move into a new apartment just ten days after her tragic death. She had ended her relationship with Taveras, which reportedly triggered his violent response.

According to Lisa, Taveras shot Denise in the back of the head when she tried to run away from him. “She screamed ‘no’ while he shot her,” Lisa said. The sisters have urged others to be aware of the signs of domestic abuse and not to ignore the “red flags” in their own relationships. Shannon emphasized the importance of seeking support from family and not hiding anything. “Don’t hide anything from your family… walk when you see the red flags,” she said.
