Death Ruled as Homicide in New Hampshire Standoff

A man who was shot and killed by police during a standoff in New Hampshire Monday has been identified as 42-year-old Nate Landrebe, and his death has been ruled a homicide, Attorney General John M. Formella said Tuesday.

An autopsy on Landrebe’s body determined that the 42-year-old’s cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds, and that the manner of his death was homicide, Formella said on Nov. 21.

Landrebe was engaged in an armed standoff with officers at his home at 32 West Bow St. in Franklin, New Hampshire beginning the evening of Nov. 19-20.

Neighbour Calls Police as Gunshots Ring Out

A woman living across the hall from Landrebe called police, reporting that he tried to break through her front door just before 10 p.m. on Nov. 20. Luckily, the woman remained unharmed.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that Landrebe had fired shots at the door, further escalating the situation.

Gunshots continued to ring out from Landrebe’s apartment, leading to an armed standoff. The New Hampshire State Police SWAT Unit was called to the scene for assistance, according to Formella.

Residents Forced to Shelter in Place as Standoff Unfolds

At approximately 2:45 a.m., residents in the area of Central and West Bow Streets were instructed to shelter in place due to the ongoing standoff. The order was eventually lifted.

Around 2:35 a.m., witnesses reported seeing smoke emanating from the apartment building. Shortly after 3 a.m., flames were visible as Landrebe continued to exchange gunfire with state troopers.

Landrebe was eventually found behind the building near a first-floor window, suffering from gunshot wounds. The Attorney General confirmed that two SWAT members had discharged their weapons during the incident, but their identities have not yet been released.

First Responders Unable to Save Landrebe

Despite attempts by first responders to perform CPR, the intensity of the fire prevented them from reaching Landrebe. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Thankfully, no law enforcement personnel were physically harmed during the standoff, and authorities have confirmed that there is no threat to the public.

The apartment building suffered significant damage from the fire, which is currently under investigation by the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office. Officials have stated that they do not believe the fire was a result of law enforcement action.

As the investigation into this incident remains active, Attorney General Formella assured the public that additional information will be released as it becomes available.
