ICE Apprehends Illegal Immigrant Fugitive Wanted for Child Rape in Brazil

Increased Efforts to Combat Criminal Illegal Immigration

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) made a significant breakthrough this week by apprehending an illegal immigrant Brazilian fugitive, Saulo Cardona Ferreira, on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Ferreira, who is wanted in his home country for failing to serve a prison sentence for raping a 5-year-old child, had managed to evade authorities for an extended period.

According to ICE, Ferreira, 37, had received numerous criminal convictions in Brazil in 2019 for his heinous crime against the child and had been sentenced to 14 years in prison. However, he fled the country, and a warrant for his arrest was issued by the town of Sorriso, Mato Grosso.

The agency revealed that Ferreira had illicitly entered the United States at an unspecified time and location, successfully evading Border Patrol as a “gotaway.”

ICE’s Fugitive Operations Team successfully apprehended Ferreira during a routine vehicle stop in Martha’s Vineyard. The team had initiated an investigation in September after detecting Ferreira’s potential presence in the area through a law enforcement data review. Finally, on November 14, Ferreira was arrested near his address and is currently in custody, awaiting a court appearance before an immigration judge.

Expressing the gravity of the situation, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston Field Office Director Todd Lyons stated, “This undocumented Brazilian national represented a significant threat to the inhabitants of Martha’s Vineyard. He sexually assaulted a five-year-old child in his homeland and then ran from authorities when held accountable for his actions. ERO Boston will not allow such predators to threaten our residents. We will continue to apprehend and remove anyone who attempts to use our New England community as a refuge from justice.”

ICE’s efforts to combat criminal illegal immigration have yielded significant results. In the fiscal year 2022 alone, the agency arrested 46,396 illegal immigrants with criminal histories, including 8,164 individuals involved in sex and sexual assault offenses.

It is important to note that last year, Martha’s Vineyard faced migration-related controversies when Florida Governor Ron DeSantis flew dozens of migrants to the liberal vacation destination. However, there is no connection between those flights and Ferreira, as he likely arrived in the area years earlier.

Challenging Times at the Southern Border

The arrest of Ferreira comes at a time when the United States is grappling with a historic crisis at its southern border. The number of migrant encounters exceeded 249,000 in October, following a staggering 2.4 million encounters in the 2023 fiscal year. Cities and states have declared themselves overwhelmed by the influx of migrants, with Massachusetts officials also calling for increased federal assistance to address what they deem a “federal problem.”

Recently, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas confirmed that over 600,000 individuals managed to evade law enforcement at the southern border in the 2023 fiscal year. Since the beginning of the new fiscal year in October, there have been over 1,000 such cases daily, as reported by Fox News.

As the nation continues to grapple with the challenges posed by illegal immigration, ICE’s successful arrest of Ferreira serves as a reminder of the agency’s unwavering commitment to protect communities from dangerous criminals and remove those who seek to evade justice.
