The shooter has been identified as 20-year-old Benjamin Charles Jones from Dayton. He entered the Walmart store on Monday night, armed with a Hi-Point 45-caliber Carbine long gun. Jones fired multiple rounds, causing injuries to unsuspecting victims throughout the building, before turning the weapon on himself.

Efforts to reach Jones’ relatives have been unsuccessful, leaving many questions unanswered about his motive and background. Meanwhile, authorities have declined to release the identities of the victims, who are currently receiving treatment at local hospitals. Three of them are in stable condition, while one woman remains in critical but stable condition.

This tragic incident comes on the heels of another Walmart shooting in Anchorage, Alaska, where a man fatally shot a woman before taking his own life. Police in Anchorage have confirmed that the incident was related to domestic violence.

The Ohio Walmart store has unfortunately seen violence in the past. In 2014, a white police officer shot and killed 22-year-old John Crawford III, an unarmed Black man, after mistaking the toy pellet rifle Crawford was holding for a real weapon. The incident sparked outrage and led to changes in police policy, including a $1.7 million settlement reached between Crawford’s family and the city of Beavercreek.

The Walmart chain has also been a target of racially motivated violence in the past. In 2019, a white gunman targeted Hispanic shoppers at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, killing 23 people. This tragic event prompted Walmart to discontinue sales of certain types of ammunition and to request that customers no longer openly carry firearms in their stores. The retailer now exclusively sells hunting rifles and related ammunition.
