Accident – Death – Obituary News : Irish Woman Shot Dead in New York City in Apparent Murder-Suicide

Denise Morgan, a 39-year-old mother-of-one originally from Tullyallen in County Louth, was tragically killed in an apparent murder-suicide in New York City. The incident occurred on October 21st, when her life was cut short at a property in Queens.

According to the New York Police Department, the body of 33-year-old Joed Taveras, Denise’s former partner, was found deceased nearby, and a firearm was recovered at the scene. Denise’s sisters, Lisa and Shannon Morgan, are now speaking out about the importance of recognizing “red flags” in relationships to prevent such tragedies.

Lisa and Shannon have bravely shared their sister’s story to raise awareness about domestic violence. Denise had moved to New York seven years ago with her ex-husband and their daughter, following an amicable divorce. However, her life took a dark turn when she became involved with Taveras.

The sisters revealed that Denise had endured years of coercive abuse at the hands of Taveras. Lisa personally witnessed the abuse during a visit to New York two years ago. In recent months, the abuse escalated to physical violence. The family has even shared text messages from Denise in which she detailed instances of Taveras strangling her and holding a knife to her throat.

“We felt helpless,” Shannon said, reflecting on their conversations with Denise. “She was constantly always telling us what was going on and it was worrying us more. We knew she was in a bad situation…that’s the guilt that’s going to live with us forever is knowing what could have been.”

Denise had made the courageous decision to leave Taveras and was due to move into a new apartment just 10 days after her tragic death. Unfortunately, her attempt to break free from the abusive relationship resulted in violence. Lisa tearfully recounted the horrifying details of her sister’s final moments, stating, “He shot her in the back of the head, she tried to run away from him, she screamed ‘no’ while he shot her… there was fighting and then there was the gunshot, and 10 seconds later there was a second gunshot.”

Heartbroken and still in shock, Lisa and Shannon are determined to raise awareness about domestic abuse and encourage others to recognize the warning signs in their own relationships. They stress the importance of not hiding such behavior from loved ones, as embarrassment and shame often prevent victims from speaking out.

“Don’t hide anything from your family,” Shannon emphasized. “Sometimes as women, we tend to ignore this behavior – the jealousy, the controlling – and you’re embarrassed to speak out about it because you know that you’re going to go back to the abuser. It’s shame, it’s embarrassing… They’re never going to change, walk when you see the red flags.”

As the sisters continue to come to terms with the devastating loss of their beloved Denise, they hope that sharing her story will help prevent others from experiencing a similar fate. “It’s not right, no family should ever have to go through this,” Lisa added.
