Accident – Death – Obituary News : Celtic Football Club Slapped with £15,200 Fine for Displaying Palestinian Flags during UEFA Champions League Match against Atlético Madrid
Glasgow-based football club, Celtic, has been hit with a hefty fine of £15,200 ($19,000) by UEFA for their fans’ display of Palestinian flags during a recent UEFA Champions League clash against Atlético Madrid. The incident, which took place last month, has been deemed a violation of UEFA regulations, as these flags were considered “provocative messages of an offensive nature,” according to a statement released by the governing body on Wednesday.

Despite prior warnings from the Scottish club, hundreds of Celtic supporters defiantly waved Palestinian flags before the match on October 25th, creating a significant uproar. Videos of the incident, widely shared on Instagram, captured the fans passionately singing the club’s anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” while proudly displaying the Palestinian flags.
Additionally, two large banners bearing the messages “Free Palestine” and “Victory to the Resistance” were unfurled at Celtic Park, further emphasizing the fans’ solidarity with the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The conflict referred to in the banners dates back to early October when thousands of Hamas militants breached Israel’s defenses and infiltrated the southern region, resulting in the deaths of over 1,200 individuals, primarily civilians, with numerous others being taken captive. In response, Israel launched a series of devastating airstrikes on Gaza, followed by a ground invasion. The Health Ministry in the Hamas-controlled territory reported that more than 11,000 Palestinians have lost their lives during the Israeli offensive, with women and minors accounting for a significant portion of the casualties.
In addition to the fine for the flag display, Celtic was also penalized £10,000 due to fans obstructing passageways and employing pyrotechnics during the match.

Regarding their performance in the UEFA Champions League, Celtic currently occupies the fourth position in Group E, having secured just one point from their first four games. The club now faces the challenge of regaining their momentum to improve their standing in the fiercely competitive group.
