ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — An Attleboro resident, Russell Stone, has been convicted of causing a fatal accident while driving under the influence and subsequently sentenced to a minimum of five years in prison, according to Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III.

Stone, aged 63, pleaded guilty to charges of manslaughter while operating under the influence and operating under the influence causing serious bodily injury.

According to Quinn, the incident occurred on June 7, 2020, when Stone was driving at a high speed along Oak Street in Norton and lost control of his vehicle, crashing into a tree.

Witnesses at the scene reported that a woman emerged from the passenger’s seat, screaming that she had warned Stone to slow down, prosecutors revealed.

The crash resulted in severe head trauma for a passenger seated in the back, identified as 36-year-old Theresa McNutt, who was declared dead on-site by emergency responders.

Upon investigation, authorities discovered several empty nip bottles scattered inside Stone’s vehicle. DNA analysis confirmed that the bottles belonged to Stone.

Prosecutors revealed that at the time of the accident, Stone’s blood alcohol level was .184, more than twice the legal limit.

Quinn stated, “[Stone] should not have been behind the wheel due to his intoxicated state. His reckless driving led to the tragic death of an innocent person.”

The woman in the passenger’s seat sustained a fractured spine and three arm fractures. During questioning, she informed investigators that Stone had been screaming that he wanted to die moments before the crash.

Stone has been sentenced to serve a term of five to seven years in prison for his actions.
