BENGALURU: A horrifying incident of road rage in Bengaluru has left the city in shock. A 77-year-old man was beaten to death for reprimanding a motorcyclist who was riding recklessly near the Palace Guttahalli area. The victim, identified as Krishnappa, was on his way to a medical shop to buy anti-diabetic tablets when he was brutally attacked.

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the declining tolerance levels among motorists in Bengaluru. The incident took place on the night of November 15, but initially, it was registered as a road accident case. The police assumed that Krishnappa had fallen off his scooter while on his way to the medical shop. However, Krishnappa’s son, Satish Kumar, suspected foul play and decided to investigate further.

Kumar reviewed the CCTV footage from his house and was horrified to discover that his father had been involved in an argument with a person who later assaulted him. Based on the footage, the Vyalikaval police registered a murder case on November 17.

After analyzing CCTV grabs from the locality, the police were able to identify the accused as 35-year-old Sarfaraz Khan, a welder-cum-mechanic and former resident of the area. Khan had recently shifted to the RT Nagar area but would frequently visit Palace Guttahalli to meet up with his friends and party with them.

On the night of the incident, Khan was riding his bike towards Palace Guttahalli when he collided with Krishnappa’s scooter. The impact caused Krishnappa to lose his balance, and in response, he shouted at Khan, reprimanding him for his reckless driving. Enraged by Krishnappa’s admonishment, Khan hit him with a stone and continued to rain blows upon him. One of Khan’s friends, Ratan, attempted to intervene and stop the attack, but his efforts were in vain.

Krishnappa collapsed on the road, while Khan and Ratan fled the scene. A passerby witnessed the brutal assault and immediately alerted the police. Krishnappa was rushed to a nearby hospital and later transferred to Mahaveer Jain Hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Initially, the police had labeled the incident as a “self-accident” and cited Krishnappa’s lack of a helmet as a contributing factor. However, thanks to Satish Kumar’s vigilance and the CCTV evidence, Khan was identified as the main perpetrator. A senior police officer has confirmed that they will be opening a rowdy sheet against Khan at the earliest.

This shocking incident has once again highlighted the need for increased road safety awareness in Bengaluru. It serves as a stark reminder that a moment of anger can have severe consequences and lead to the loss of innocent lives. The authorities and citizens alike must work together to promote a culture of respect and tolerance on the roads to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.
