SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, California – A 54-year-old man from Upland is dead after an intense standoff with law enforcement in San Bernardino County on Monday night. The situation came to a violent end when the suspect’s home erupted in flames, and he was killed as he ran out.

The incident unfolded at around 3:15 p.m. on Monday when deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department went to a residence in the 1500 block of Fairwood Way in Upland to serve a search warrant.

According to a news release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, deputies initially made contact with two individuals at the home. However, a third person identified as Charles Staudenmayer began firing on the authorities and barricading himself inside the house.

In response to the escalating situation, the sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division and officers from the Upland Police Department were called in to assist. Crisis negotiators spent several hours attempting to persuade Staudenmayer to come out of the house peacefully.

During the standoff, authorities deployed tear gas and tried to enter the home. It was at this point that the suspect allegedly began setting off explosives, according to CBS News Los Angeles.

After more than six hours, at approximately 9:28 p.m., a fire broke out in the house. Video footage captured by KTLA showed heavy smoke and flames engulfing the residence as crews from the Upland Fire Department worked to extinguish the blaze. Nearby residences were evacuated as a precaution.

Tragically, as the house was consumed by fire, Staudenmayer exited the building and was fatally shot by deputies. No one else was inside the home during the standoff and subsequent fire. Authorities have reported no other injuries.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the San Bernardino County Fire Department. Detectives from the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division are also conducting an investigation into the “lethal use of force encounter.”
