Accident – Death – Obituary News : Man Arrested for Allegedly Murdering Live-in Partner and Dumping Body in Suitcase

MUMBAI: The city crime branch made a breakthrough on Monday by arresting a 21-year-old man in connection with the murder of his live-in partner. The accused, identified as Askar Manoj Barla, allegedly strangled his partner, Pratima Kispatta (25), and stuffed her body in a suitcase. He then dumped the suitcase near a construction site on CST-LBS Marg in Kurla on Sunday.

The arrest was made by officials of units XI and unit V, who apprehended Barla at Thane station just as he was about to board a train to his hometown in Odisha. The police were able to identify the deceased with the help of her sister, who recognized her from a photograph circulated through various channels.

According to Raj Tilak Roushan, deputy commissioner of police (crime), Kispatta had lost her job two months ago. She used to work with a housekeeping firm before her unemployment. The couple was residing in Dharavi, where Barla worked in a sweet shop. However, when the police went to their residence, Barla was found missing. The investigation then took a turn when the police scanned CCTV footage of the area and tracked Barla’s mobile phone, leading them to Thane station.

Further investigation revealed that Barla and Kispatta had met during the Covid-19 lockdown while returning to Odisha from Mumbai. They decided to return to Mumbai in July and began living together in Dharavi. However, their relationship was marred by constant arguments, primarily due to Barla’s suspicions of Kispatta having an affair.

During the interrogation, Barla confessed to strangling Kispatta during an argument in the early hours of Sunday. Enraged, he then placed her lifeless body inside a suitcase and hired an autorickshaw from Sion to transport it. Barla dumped the suitcase on CST-LBS Marg with the intention of placing it in an outstation train at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. However, he changed his mind and abandoned the suitcase on the road out of fear.

Ghanshyam Nair, senior police inspector of crime branch unit V, stated, “The accused had planned to place the suitcase in an outstation train at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, but developed cold feet and dumped it on the road.”

The police have charged Barla with murder and are conducting further investigations into the case. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing relationship issues in a peaceful and constructive manner to prevent such tragic outcomes.
