In a devastating incident that occurred on Old Woman Springs Road, two individuals from Twentynine Palms tragically lost their lives, while another suffered from severe injuries. The incident took place this morning (November 20) at around 8:35 a.m., prompting an immediate response from the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Violating Traffic Laws Leads to Fatal Collision

According to the CHP’s preliminary investigation, a Jeep Cherokee, driven by Josie Stijepovic, a 39-year-old female hailing from Helendale, was traveling southbound on Old Woman Springs Road, just north of Olivine Road in Landers. Shockingly, Stijepovic attempted to overtake another vehicle by crossing over double yellow lines, disregarding traffic regulations.

Tragically, this reckless maneuver resulted in a head-on collision between the Jeep and a Kia that was traveling northbound in the correct lane. The driver of the Kia, a 36-year-old man from Twentynine Palms, and his passenger, a 33-year-old woman, also from Twentynine Palms, were the unfortunate victims of this catastrophic accident.

Multiple Fatalities and Severe Injuries

The impact of the collision was grave. The passenger in the Kia lost their life instantly, succumbing to their injuries at the scene. The driver of the Kia, although initially alive, was rushed to Hi-Desert Medical Center in critical condition. Tragically, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, he too was later pronounced dead.

Stijepovic, the driver of the Jeep, suffered major injuries as a result of the collision. Emergency services promptly transported her to Desert Regional Medical Center for urgent medical attention.

Investigation and Factors Involved

The authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this devastating accident. Initial observations suggest the potential involvement of alcohol and/or drugs, which may have impaired Stijepovic’s ability to safely operate her vehicle. However, thorough investigations are underway to ascertain the exact cause and contributing factors of this tragic incident.
