A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday night in the Beliatore Cinema Hall area of Bankura, West Bengal, when a 23-year-old man, identified as Rahul Lohar, took his own life after being heartbroken by India’s defeat in the ICC men’s Cricket World Cup final against Australia.

Rahul Lohar, who was known as a passionate cricket enthusiast, had taken a day off to watch the highly-anticipated final match. However, unable to cope with the disappointment of India’s loss, he allegedly hanged himself in his room.

Speaking about the incident, Babu Uttam Sur, Rahul Lohar’s son-in-law, said, “Rahul died by suicide by wrapping a veil around his neck at home after not being able to accept the defeat (of India) by Australia in the final of the Cricket World Cup.”

Tragically, no one was present at home when the incident occurred.

Upon receiving the information, local police promptly arrived at the scene and recovered Rahul Lohar’s body. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Hospital.

Additional Superintendent of Police of Bankura, Siddharth Dorjee, stated, “It is not possible to draw any conclusions until the investigation is complete. As of now, the investigation is ongoing. A case of unnatural death has been registered by the police.”

The loss in the Cricket World Cup final came as a major blow to the Indian cricket team and its fans. Australia emerged victorious, defeating India by six wickets in the final match held in Ahmedabad. Travis Head played a remarkable innings, scoring 137 runs off 120 balls, as the Australians successfully chased down the target of 241 runs in just 43 overs.

This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the emotional investment that fans often have in the outcome of sporting events. It highlights the need for individuals to seek support and find healthy ways to cope with disappointment.
