The events unfolded on Saturday night when the RCMP in Dawson Creek went to the residence to apprehend Beaulieu, who was the subject of an arrest warrant. In response, the area surrounding the location was cordoned off, and additional police resources were called in, including the North District Emergency Response Team, Crisis Negotiator, and Police Dog Services. The three women were able to safely leave the premises while Beaulieu barricaded himself inside.

Throughout the night, the ND ERT made continuous efforts to communicate and negotiate with Beaulieu, urging him to surrender peacefully. However, there were two instances of gunfire exchanged between Beaulieu and the police.

The following morning, at approximately 8:25 a.m., the police entered the residence and discovered Beaulieu deceased. The injuries were believed to be self-inflicted, and fortunately, no one else was harmed during the incident.

The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) will be investigating the actions of the police during the confrontation. As a result, the RCMP will refrain from releasing any further details while the investigation is ongoing.

It has been revealed that Beaulieu had a criminal history, including a conviction for manslaughter in the 2011 killing of Wesley Lulu-Gladue. Additionally, he had a long record of violent offenses dating back to 2003, which included assault, break and enter, robbery, possession of a controlled substance, and escape from custody.

Interestingly, Beaulieu had just been released from police custody in Prince George before the incident in Dawson Creek. While in custody, an officer shot him in the groin after Beaulieu grabbed bear spray and sprayed the officer in the face.

Parallel to the IIO BC investigation, the RCMP will also conduct its own inquiry into the events leading up to the interaction with Beaulieu.

On Sunday morning, the Dawson Creek RCMP advised the public to avoid the intersection of 10th Street and 107th Avenue, as well as the surrounding area.

This incident has raised concerns about the escalation of violence and the need for improved strategies and resources to handle individuals with a history of violent offenses. The investigation will shed light on the actions taken by the police and help determine if there are any lessons to be learned from this tragic event..
