By Express News Service

VISAKHAPATNAM: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) made a significant breakthrough in the Visakhapatnam espionage case by apprehending yet another suspect. The case is connected to the leakage of classified defense information through a spying network operated by the Pakistani ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence).

The accused, identified as Amaan Salim Shaikh, was apprehended in a joint operation conducted by the NIA and local authorities in Mumbai. The central agency also conducted simultaneous raids at two locations—one in Mumbai and the other in Hojai, Assam, as part of their investigation into the case.

Salim is the third individual to be arrested in connection with this high-profile espionage case.

The NIA has already filed chargesheets against four individuals, including two Pakistani operatives who are currently on the run.

During their investigation, the NIA discovered that Salim had played a crucial role in activating the SIM cards that were being used by the Pakistani intelligence officers involved in the espionage racket. This finding further strengthens the evidence against the accused and their connection to the spying network.

The incident came to light in 2021 when the counterintelligence cell in Andhra Pradesh registered the case on January 12, 2021. The case was filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and Official Secrets Act, according to an official release.

With each new arrest and development in the investigation, the NIA’s efforts to dismantle this espionage network are gaining momentum. The agency is working tirelessly to ensure that all individuals involved in the leak of classified defense information are brought to justice.
