The joint operation conducted by Crime Branch Unit 11 and Unit 5 led to the arrest of Barla, a native of Odisha who was residing in the Dharavi slums along with the deceased. The victim has been identified as Pratima Kispatta, a 25-year-old also hailing from Odisha. The motive behind the murder is still unclear, but preliminary inquiries suggest that the accused and the victim, who were in a live-in relationship, had a heated argument which escalated into a violent act.

The case came to light on Sunday when some locals alerted the police about a suspicious suitcase lying near a garden on CST-Kurla road. Upon opening the suitcase, the police discovered the lifeless body of an unidentified woman. The only identification found on her was a cross pendant around her neck. The body was sent for post-mortem examination, and the Kurla police registered a murder case. Various units of the crime branch were then mobilized to identify the victim. Fortunately, the deceased’s sister recognized her from the circulated pictures and informed the police about her identity.

The police emphasized that their first priority was to establish the victim’s identity, as it would aid in the investigation. It was revealed that the deceased and the accused were both from Odisha and had recently entered into a live-in relationship. According to the accused, a petty argument on Saturday led him to strangle the victim in a fit of rage. He then contemplated various means to dispose of the body before deciding to hide it in a suitcase.

Early Saturday morning, the accused hired an auto-rickshaw from Sion and asked the driver to wait for a few minutes while he handed over the baggage to someone. Subsequently, he dumped the suitcase containing the victim’s body near the garden on CST-Kurla road.
