LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man who allegedly crashed his vehicle into a barrier on the Las Vegas Strip, claimed that he swerved to avoid colliding with another vehicle. The incident took place on Thursday, November 16, at around 1:40 p.m., when officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department were summoned to the intersection of East Flamingo Road and Las Vegas Boulevard, in front of Caesars Palace Hotel and Casino.

Upon arrival, the officers discovered a Chevrolet SUV partially on and off the curb, having crashed through a barrier in front of the resort.

Emergency services transported two individuals to a local hospital with injuries described as “non-life-threatening.”

The driver, identified as Carlos Avila, a 30-year-old male, informed the police that he swerved to avoid a collision after another vehicle cut him off while he was driving on Las Vegas Boulevard. However, surveillance footage from The Cromwell, a nearby establishment, revealed that Avila’s vehicle narrowly missed the center median before losing control and crashing into the barrier. The video did not show any other vehicle involved in the incident.

Upon making contact with Avila, the police observed several signs of impairment. Avila was sweating profusely, acting extremely agitated, and unable to stay still. Additionally, his eyes were bloodshot. Detecting a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, the officers questioned Avila about his alcohol consumption. Avila admitted to having consumed an unknown alcoholic beverage, but could not provide information regarding the timing.

Avila also admitted to using marijuana on a daily basis.

During a search of Avila’s vehicle, the police discovered both empty and full bottles of Corona, as well as a bag containing a green leafy substance.

Although Avila agreed to perform a field sobriety test, he displayed an inability to focus on the instructions and would frequently walk away while the officers were explaining the tests. Consequently, the police did not administer any tests.

Subsequently, Avila was arrested and taken to the Clark County Detention Center, where he was held on a $10,000 bail. He now faces two charges of DUI resulting in substantial bodily harm.

If Avila manages to post bail, he will be prohibited from driving and will be subjected to electronic monitoring. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 5th at 9:30 a.m.

This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of impaired driving and the importance of responsible behavior on the roads. Authorities continue to urge individuals to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to ensure the safety of themselves and others..
