Investigation Launched into Death of Kevin Tyler Whitted, Inmate at Jay County Jail

(Portland, IN) 20th November 2023 – Earlier this morning, at approximately 8:00 am, the Jay County Sheriff reached out to the Indiana State Police Fort Wayne Post, requesting their assistance in investigating the unfortunate demise of an inmate at the Jay County jail. In response, a detective from the Fort Wayne Post promptly arrived at the scene to take charge of the investigation.

Preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation reveal that the deceased inmate has been identified as Kevin Tyler Whitted, a 33-year-old resident of Muncie, Indiana. Whitted was being held in a padded cell at the Jay County jail, under constant surveillance by jail staff through overhead surveillance video. It is important to note that Whitted was the sole occupant of the cell at the time.

At approximately 7:22 am this morning, jail staff observed Whitted suddenly fall forward within his cell. Responding swiftly, the jail nurse entered the cell to assess his condition. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the nurse instructed the jail staff to immediately contact emergency medical services (EMS). While waiting for EMS personnel to arrive, the jail staff initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in an attempt to revive the inmate. Subsequently, Whitted was transported via ambulance from the jail to the IU hospital in Portland. Unfortunately, despite the efforts made, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

While the exact cause of death has not been confirmed, it is suspected that Whitted may have suffered from a medical condition related to withdrawal symptoms associated with drug addiction. To shed light on the circumstances leading to Whitted’s untimely passing, the Jay County Coroner has scheduled an autopsy for tomorrow.

The necessary notifications have been made to Whitted’s family, allowing them to process this devastating news.

The Indiana State Police continue to diligently investigate this tragic incident, treating it as an active death investigation. As of now, no further information regarding the case is available for release.
