Marquelle Jones, a dedicated behavior technician at Hendley Elementary School, expressed his concerns, stating, “It’s frustrating because at the end of the day, we just want the kids to be safe here.” The presence of gun violence near the school poses a significant challenge in ensuring the well-being of the children.

Jones recounted the terrifying experience during dismissal, explaining, “With the situation today, it was in the middle of dismissal, so we are all just focused on trying to get everybody inside and just making sure the kids are good.” The urgency to protect the students from potential harm was paramount, leading the school to initiate a lockdown after being informed by D.C. police about the nearby shooting.

According to authorities, the shooting took place at a housing complex on 4th Street, near the intersection of Chesapeake Street. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, as police work to determine the circumstances that led to the deadly shooting. Sadly, for the students of Hendley Elementary School, such incidents of violence have become distressingly common.

Jones revealed the impact of these shootings on his students, saying, “We hear the kids talk about it within each other. Sometimes, they will be like ‘Oh did you hear the shooting last night? My mom had me hide under the couch. My mom had me hiding under the table.'” The normalization of such experiences is deeply unsettling, creating an environment in which children should not have to live.

Despite the challenges faced outside the school’s walls, Jones emphasized the resilience and spirit of the students within, stating, “I work here because the kids here are wonderful. We have some of the best kids in the city, regardless of what goes on outside of this building, inside this building they are regular kids.”

As the investigation continues, police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the case. The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Rodney Snead from District Heights, Maryland. This tragic incident adds to the concerning trend of rising homicides in the area, with recent data from the Metropolitan Police Department revealing that there have been 247 homicides in 2023, marking the highest total in nearly two decades.
