DETROIT, Mich. (FOX 2) – Michigan State Police have apprehended 18 individuals on Monday as part of an ongoing investigation into a potential human trafficking operation in Detroit. The suspects were detained following an extensive surveillance operation conducted by the Second District Special Investigation Traffic Abduction Group (TAG) in collaboration with the Michigan Emergency Support Team and MSP Surveillance Team.

The investigation began when Metro North Post troopers, while responding to a stolen vehicle report in the Charter Township of Royal Oak last week, noticed suspicious activity that raised concerns. “During the interviews, troopers discovered evidence of a possible human trafficking operation,” stated MSP Second District in a tweet.
Following this discovery, TAG launched a comprehensive inquiry which led them to identify three residences on Hartwell Street in Detroit, where they believed potential victims of human trafficking were being held against their will. In a swift operation, TAG detectives, supported by the Michigan Emergency Support Team and MSP Surveillance Team, executed three separate search warrants on Monday, resulting in the apprehension of 18 individuals.
TAG detectives are currently conducting interviews with all those involved in order to gather more evidence and provide assistance to any identified victims. The Michigan State Police are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of these individuals, aiming to rescue them from this horrific environment and provide them with the necessary support and care.
Lieutenant Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police expressed his appreciation for the troopers’ attention to detail and diligence in investigating beyond the initial stolen vehicle report. “This is just one of the many examples of troopers looking beyond the original call,” he stated. “They were able to dig deep and, with the help of TAG, rescue these victims from a dire situation and provide them with the help they need.”
