The Incident

Shortly after midnight, emergency services responded to reports of a single-vehicle rollover crash in the parking lot of Young Park. The stolen Hyundai Tucson had overturned, resulting in the ejection of a 20-year-old woman, later identified as Leilani Solis. Tragically, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stolen Vehicle and Failed Police Attempts

Investigations revealed that the Hyundai was reported stolen earlier that day. Law enforcement officers from the Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) had encountered the stolen vehicle three times during the day. On each occasion, they attempted to perform traffic stops, but the driver evaded capture. Due to safety concerns, the officers decided against pursuing the vehicle.

Owner’s Encounter and Tragic Outcome

Later that evening, the owner of the stolen vehicle coincidentally spotted her SUV at Young Park and promptly notified the police. She attempted to confront the individuals responsible, but they quickly fled in the stolen vehicle, speeding onto Walnut Street. The driver then re-entered the parking lot, following the owner who was on foot. In a fateful turn of events, the driver lost control while making a sharp turn, causing the vehicle to roll over.

Arrest and Missing Passenger

Following the rollover, the 16-year-old driver and two 15-year-old male passengers fled the scene on foot. Las Cruces police were able to locate and apprehend the driver and one of the passengers. However, the second 15-year-old passenger has yet to be found.

The teenager has been booked into the juvenile section of the Dona Ana County Detention Center. Due to his age, the police have refrained from publicly identifying him.

Ongoing Investigation

As of now, no charges have been filed against the two 15-year-old boys who were passengers in the stolen vehicle. The investigation into the incident is still underway, and authorities will continue to gather evidence to determine their involvement.
