Woman Arrested in Auburn After Allegedly Leaving the Scene of a Bicycle Accident

AUBURN, Ala. – An East Alabama woman is facing charges after Auburn police allege she left the scene of a crash after striking a bicyclist.

According to Auburn police, Thomasina Smith, a 40-year-old woman from Alexander City, AL, was arrested on Sunday, Nov. 19, on charges of leaving the scene of an accident with injury.

The incident took place on Saturday, Nov. 18, when police responded to a call about an unresponsive female lying on the side of the roadway in the area of North College Street and Farmville Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim who had sustained injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle while riding her bicycle on North College Street. The victim was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment and is currently in stable but critical condition.

Auburn police collected additional evidence at the scene and obtained witness statements, leading them to identify Thomasina Smith as the driver of the vehicle that struck the victim and left the scene. The case is still under investigation, and Auburn Police are actively working on gathering more information.

Following the investigation, Thomasina Smith was arrested and taken to the Lee County Jail. She is currently being held on a $10,000 bond.

Motorists are reminded to provide ample space when passing a cyclist, as Alabama law requires a minimum of three feet of clearance between the vehicle and the bicycle being passed.
