Mother Seeks Justice for Slain Transgender Daughter in Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Clara Taylor, a grieving mother, recalls the haunting words that replay constantly in her mind: “Mrs. Taylor … we need you to come and identify an individual who we think may be your child.” This heart-wrenching statement was made to her by the coroner and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office on that fateful morning of October 3, 2020.

On that tragic day, Taylor’s worst nightmare became a reality. Her daughter, Felycya Harris, a transgender woman, was found shot to death in southwest Augusta. The loss of her child was an unimaginable pain for Taylor, who has already endured the grief of losing two other children. The weight of this tragedy makes each new day a daunting challenge for her.

However, Taylor’s indomitable spirit and maternal love have propelled her into action. She firmly believes that a mother’s fight is never over; it is only just beginning. In November 2021, Jerrome Miller, a man with a history of assault and battery, was arrested for the murder of Felycya Harris.

Unfortunately, Taylor was unable to attend Miller’s initial bond hearing and express her sentiments from the depths of her heart. Nevertheless, on Monday, she will have the opportunity to attend a revision bond hearing, and News 12 will be there to cover the proceedings.

Taylor understands that strength is her only option to ensure that the transgender community in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) no longer bears the weight of being targeted. She will be present at the hearing, determined to seek justice for her daughter and protect the rights and safety of the transgender community.
