According to the Birmingham Police Department (BPD), the first homicide took place at 2:55 a.m. when officers responded to reports of gunshots on 19th Street Ensley. Upon arrival, they found an adult male lying in the road with a gunshot wound. The victim, identified as 36-year-old Demetrious Restee Williams from Fairfield, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Later in the day, at around 1:33 p.m., police received another call and discovered a deceased male in the driver’s seat of a vehicle on 18th Street Ensley. The victim, identified as 24-year-old Zion Kewayne Taylor, had also suffered from a gunshot wound. Investigators believe Taylor had been involved in a verbal altercation with an unknown individual prior to the shooting.

The violence continued at 4:01 p.m. when officers responded to another shooting call. They found a wounded male near a vehicle at the intersection of 26th Street Ensley and Avenue C. The victim, identified as 22-year-old Lakevin Ralpheal Debruce from Adamsville, was transported to UAB Hospital but succumbed to his injuries almost an hour later.

These three homicides have shocked the community and raised concerns about the escalating violence in the area. Just last week, the BPD had claimed that Birmingham was experiencing a decline in homicides compared to the previous year. However, with 144 homicides in 2021, the highest in decades, the city had already witnessed an alarming level of violence. Some of the victims were innocent children, and many incidents resulted from stray bullets fired in drive-by shootings.

Despite the recent decrease in homicides, Saturday’s incidents bring the total number of killings in Birmingham this year to 113. While this figure is lower than the 120 homicides recorded from January to November 2022, it still represents a significant loss of life and highlights the ongoing issue of violence in the city.

Authorities are now working tirelessly to investigate these recent homicides and apprehend those responsible. The BPD is urging anyone with information about the incidents to come forward and assist in their efforts to bring justice to the victims and their families.

The rise in violent crime continues to be a pressing concern for Birmingham, as residents and community leaders strive to find solutions to address the underlying causes and ensure the safety of their neighborhoods..
