Taxi Driver Sentenced to Prison for Hit-and-Run Death of Francis Alvarado-Trejo

Accident – Death – Obituary News : MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — A taxi driver has been sentenced to state prison after confessing to striking a man with his car in Morristown and leaving him for dead earlier this summer, authorities said.

Jermaine Edwards, a 51-year-old former resident of Morristown, has been handed a five-year prison sentence, as announced by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office. Additionally, Edwards will face a five-year suspension of his driver’s license upon his release from prison.

Edwards, who was not licensed to drive a taxi, collided with Francis Alvarado-Trejo, a 40-year-old Morristown resident, around 9 p.m. on August 12. The incident occurred in the vicinity of Lafayette Avenue and Lackawanna Place, according to the police report.

Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement officials discovered that Edwards had fled, leaving Alvarado-Trejo severely injured in the roadway. Tragically, Alvarado-Trejo succumbed to his injuries.

Two days later, Edwards was identified as the driver responsible and subsequently arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. On October 18, he pleaded guilty to the offense.

The hit-and-run incident prompted Morristown officials to take decisive action against the local taxi company involved. Enslin’s LLC/G&S Car Service had its license indefinitely revoked by the Morristown council in a unanimous 5-0 vote during a special meeting. During the meeting, George Enslin, the owner of the taxi company, expressed remorse for the incident. He acknowledged knowing Edwards’ mother and mentioned that Edwards had experienced challenging times in the past, including charges on his record.
