Investigation Underway After Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office K9 Killed During Arrest

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are currently conducting an investigation into a suspect who allegedly killed a K9 officer from the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office during an arrest.

According to online jail records, 24-year-old Kaylon Kirkwood was taken into custody on Thursday and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail. He is facing multiple charges, including infliction of harm, disability, or death to a dog, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, battery of a law enforcement officer, violation of a protection order, aggravated robbery, domestic battery, and intimidation of a witness. It is expected that Kirkwood will appear in court later this week.

The incident took place near the intersection of Pawnee and Rock in Wichita. The Wichita Police Domestic Intervention and Violence Reduction team were in the area attempting to locate Kirkwood, who was wanted in connection with a robbery. Wichita Police Lieutenant Aaron Moses provided details of the events.

Kirkwood was located by the police just after noon, but he immediately fled into a nearby creek and barricaded himself inside a storm drain, refusing to surrender.

In an effort to apprehend Kirkwood, sheriff’s deputies and police utilized extended leashes and deployed K9 officers into the storm drain. Unfortunately, an altercation ensued between Kirkwood and Sedgwick County Sheriff K9 Bane, resulting in the tragic death of the K9 officer. Moses confirmed that the dog was pronounced deceased at the scene.

After a standoff lasting several hours, Kirkwood was finally apprehended at around 2:30 p.m. He was then transported for treatment of minor injuries sustained during the altercation with the K9 officer. Following his release from medical care, Kirkwood was booked into the Sedgwick County Detention Center.

In order to determine the exact cause of death, a necropsy will be conducted on the deceased K9 officer. The Wichita Police Department is leading the investigation and will subsequently present the case to the district attorney’s office, as stated by Sheriff’s Lieutenant Nathan Gibbs.
