A suspect has been detained in connection with the murder of prominent Latvian businessman and politician, Andris Lubka. Latvian authorities have confirmed that Igor Hait, born in 1975, is the primary suspect in the case. The arrest comes just two days after Lubka was brutally shot near a shopping center in Rezekne. Identification of Suspects

Following the murder of Andris Lubka, Igor Hait and another individual were swiftly identified as the prime suspects. While Hait’s detention was ordered by the court, the second suspect was not subjected to the same security measure. Instead, the police implemented a non-custodial security measure for the unidentified suspect. The severity of the crime has resulted in the reclassification of the criminal proceedings under Article 117.10 of the Criminal Law, which pertains to aggravated murder committed by a group.

Chronology of Events

The police received a distressing report on Friday at approximately 13:58, alerting them to gunshots fired at a man. The victim, later identified as Andris Lubka, tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The assailant fled in a Volkswagen Touareg. Within just ninety minutes, an intensive search operation, known as ‘Slazdi’, led to the identification and subsequent arrest of the driver of the sought-after vehicle. The shooter, Igor Hait, abandoned the Volkswagen Touareg in Vērēmu parish, located in the Rezekne region.

Motives Behind the Crime

Preliminary information gathered by the police indicates the presence of a prior conflict between the involved parties before the murder occurred. Andris Lubka, a member of the Ludza municipal council from the Green and Farmers’ Union, was also the successful owner of a woodworking company named ‘Lūsēni’ in Rezekne. The company boasted an impressive turnover of 18,529,485 euros and a profit of 7,138,909 euros in the preceding year. Lubka actively participated in various associations and clubs within the region, making his untimely demise a significant loss to the community.
