Mother Seeks Justice for Colton Michael Kline, Four-Year-Old Killed by Dog in Spokane Halloween Attack

The incident occurred on the evening of October 31, near the intersection of east Walton Avenue and north Nevada Street, prompting an immediate response from the Spokane Police Department (SPD). Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered that young Colton had been viciously attacked by the family’s own dog.

Despite the best efforts of first responders who provided immediate medical attention, the child sadly succumbed to his injuries, leaving the community shocked and devastated by the senseless loss.

Initially, the SPD did not suspect any criminal activity in relation to the incident, classifying it as a tragic accident unrelated to Halloween activities. However, new court documents have shed light on a previously undisclosed connection between the dog and a man named Dustin Block.

According to the recently revealed court records, Block, a 48-year-old individual, is the owner of the dog that attacked Colton. Curiously, Block is facing charges for voyeurism and possession of child pornography, and as part of his release conditions, he was prohibited from having contact with anyone under the age of 18.

Shockingly, court documents indicate that Block had been violating this order by allegedly allowing Colton to stay at his residence on multiple occasions. Consequently, the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office issued a warrant for Block’s arrest, accusing him of violating the terms of his release.

Further investigation into Block’s alleged activities uncovered a thumb drive at his home in 2021 containing disturbing images of unconscious minors with their shirts lifted, exposing them. The court documents state that Block possesses a scar on his hand that matches the one visible in the pictures.

The victim, who was 15 years old at the time, testified to the police that Block and her father would frequently drink together and exhibited inappropriate behavior. Block even offered her money to engage in sexual activities when she was still a minor.

In a court hearing earlier this summer, Block was released without bail on the condition that he would have no contact with individuals under 18 years old. However, the recent revelations indicate that he violated this order by having Colton stay at his residence.

Block is currently detained in the Spokane County Jail on a $100,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, with his trial expected to take place on December 11.

Upon learning about the charges against Block, Payton Vens, Colton’s devastated mother, expressed her shock and devastation. She revealed that she had no knowledge of Block’s pending charges and emphasized that had she been informed, she would never have allowed her son to be in his presence. Vens called for Block to be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

Vens also clarified that she had never witnessed any aggressive behavior from the dog that tragically took her son’s life. Additionally, she was unaware that Block had been drinking on the night of the incident.
