Accident – Death – Obituary News : Bridgewater Woman Fatally Struck by Car While Crossing the Road in Tragic Accident
Bridgewater, NJ – A devastating incident occurred on Sunday morning when a Bridgewater woman lost her life after being hit by a car while attempting to cross the road. The incident took place at approximately 9:55 a.m. on Union Avenue (State Highway 28) near the intersection of Finderne Avenue. The Bridgewater Township Police were immediately alerted to the fatal crash involving a pedestrian.

The victim has been identified as Maria Arevalo Zuniga, a 77-year-old resident of Bridgewater. According to Bridgewater Police Traffic Safety Officer Cole Taggert, Zuniga was crossing Union Avenue in an attempt to reach the bus stop on the opposite side of the road. Tragically, she was struck by a 2015 Honda CRV, driven by David Kumar, a 73-year-old resident of Somerville, who was traveling east on Union Avenue.
Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, with members of the Finderne Volunteer Rescue Squad and Robert Wood Johnson Hospital Paramedics providing immediate assistance. Arevalo Zuniga was quickly transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJ) in New Brunswick. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 4:48 p.m.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, and authorities have not filed any charges at this time. The Bridgewater Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Bureau is leading the ongoing investigation into the incident. Officer Cole Taggert, from the department’s Traffic Safety Unit, is appealing to the public for any information that may aid in determining the circumstances surrounding the crash.
